Laser Control
The laser is a universal tool for non-contact cutting, welding, marking, drilling, punching and forming materials. It is not subject to wear and tear. A 6U CompactPCI system running under VxWorks is used in the laser cutting machines produced by a global leader in laser technology. They offer the solution for almost any application and use customized technology from the Kontron Group. The customer produces computer-controlled machine tools for processing and combination machining of flexible sheet metal. The design engineers chose 6U CompactPCI to control the beam intensity because it is very shock and vibration resistant and has a passive cooling. Kontron delivers a complete, configured central unit including the VxWorks target licence on one order so our customers' logistics are as simple as possible.

Laser Control Software for Semiconductor Exposure
Kontron designed and developed the software for a highly complex laser control system. The software design was integrated into a newly selected hardware platform. Kontron design experts not only met today’s demands, but also succeeded in creating a solution that is open and flexible for future. The laser is used in the production of integrated circuits, for which a very exact exposure period by Laser is vital. The Lasers are driven in a pulsed process and the exposure energy is dosed in accurate control loops. To achieve the required accuracy, the use and re-fill volumes of the various gases and the maintenance intervals must be thoroughly tracked and fed back into the control parameters.
Kontron Solution Advantages
- Long-term stability with a leading OS (VxWorks) and a common design language (UML)
- Open to new hardware by hardware abstraction layer
- Easy adaption of the exposure device to manufacturer-specific interfaces
- Easy modification of the interface and overall laser behaviour by providing an interpreter.
- Remote maintenance
- Modular hardware solution by CompactPCI combined with DSPs
As the result, costs for future changes and for maintenance are minimized. OEM resources can concentrate on introducing new features, so that the product becomes more competitive and customers are even more satisfied.

Dispatcher Operation Control System of the Moscow Monorail Transport System
In 1999, there was CJSC “Moscow Monorail” established and the program “Moscow Monorail Transport” approved which is aimed at developing a monorail transport system in Moscow, with the participation of the Government of Moscow and Federal State Unitary Enterprise “Moscow Institute for Heat Engineering”.
Moscow Monorail Transport System (MMTS) – is not just a new type of the rolling-stock, but it’s a new spin in the field of automation control of complex transport systems. In the framework of the project RTSoft company developed and implemented dispatch control system (DCS) at the first length of the railroad between the stations “Sergei Eizenschtein Street” and “Timiryazevskaya Metro Station”. Moscow monorail is a sophisticated technical complex which is composed of a line with 12 passenger stations, electro rolling-stock (ERS), a train shed with a transborder (a mechanism for leading trains out to the line), railroad substations, automated track switches, railroad safety devices, communication systems and many others. Dispatch control system is used to control such a sophisticated complex.

Excavator
CompactPCI computers control automated systems in open-cast mining operations.
The objective was clear: a control system on a bucket-wheel excavator for mining lignite, a fossil fuel often known as brown coal, needed to be completely refurbished. Despite widespread skepticism, EWG Automation decided on a comprehensive PC-based automation solution. The system integrators developed an efficient and stable application with products from a number of suppliers. Crunching and grating, bucket wheels the size of a delivery van burrow into the black cliff. In summer the temperature in the operator's cabin, suspended just a few meters away, is almost unbearable. A constant, powerful 5Hz vibration shakes the cabin incessantly. The air in the cabin is thick with fine, black coal dust that deposits itself as a thick greasy layer on sweating skin.

Communication with Military Vehicles
Data and voice communications with military vehicles have very specific requirements. Besides "ordinary" functionality, the unit and all of its components which are placed inside the vehicles have to fulfill very specific temperature ranges as well as high shock and vibration resistance.
Providing a software operating platform, which is not used anymore in today's markets, but still validated for the military standards, was a must. Kontron engineers succeeded in finding missing pieces in the world wide web community, modifying, adapting, and testing, within a few weeks.

Control of railway tracks
Kontron has realized a CompactPCI based train control system for the French railways. There are approximately 200 control units and 2000 field units on the track connected by Ethernet. Such mission critical systems require 100 percent reliability. Therefore the fail-over control units are designed with two different hardware and software technologies for redundancy: An x86 based part with the a 3U Intel® Pentium M CPCI board, the CP306, running under Linux RT-OS and a PowerPC 8540 based part with LynxOS. If any failure occurs in one system, regardless if software or hardware, the redundant system takes over. The outdoor units placed on the rails are equipped with the E²Brain Computer-on-Module, due to features like extended temperature range, resistant to harsh environment conditions, and high reliability.

Kontron's Webserver
Kontron's webserver you are vistiting right now is a two Kontron standard CP6000 (1.6 GHz Pentium-M) blade failover system from our CompactPCI series. As you are experiencing right now, this system is a ultra high performance and high availability hardware and software setup. With Gentoo Linux (kernel 2.6.14-r2), Apache2, MySQL and PHP, we were able to set up a well balanced system which offers high capacity and high performance at minimal cost.
There are two identical CP6000 running simultaneously in a master-backup-mode. In the unlikely case of a master blade hardware failure, the backup blade will take over all services within two seconds and hands them back to the master blade as soon as it is up again. To provide constant data consistency, all data is being stored through a distributed file system (DRBD) which writes on both machines simultaneously. This guarantees 100% identical information on both blades and avoids inconsistencies in case of switching. An outage of the master blade will not even be noticed by the visitors on our web site.
Go ahead, surf this web site and convince yourself of our CP6000 performance and reliability!
Digital Radio Communication
Due to its extended temperature range, high reliability, and scalability a low power Intel® Pentium III and Pentium 4 up to 2,4 GHz based on a CompactPCI board from Kontron have been chosen to realize the next generation of cellular phone network. TETRA (Terrestrial Trunked Radio) is a standard defined by the European Telecommunications Standards Institute (ETSI). This Digital Radio System contributes higher privacy, better audio quality and improves the speed in data transmission and the capacity of access to other nets, like Internet, fixed phone nets. The use of the radio communications based on the standard TETRA, is mainly guided toward professional users that need a high specialization and reliability in its communications (e.g. police, fire department), with an inferior cost than the GSM system.vOur customer is developing a TETRA-based product range including mobile and dispatcher terminals, a 2nd generation handheld, a low cost RF TETRA modem and local/regional coverage infrastructure.
Cross Connect Computer Platform
For the management of leased lines powerful computer systems with a high degree of availability have to be applied. In this range our engineers developed a system concept of a highly compact computer platform. A 64 bit capable CompactPCI architecture with a SPARC CPU under Solaris 8 has been selected. For optimum connectivity the design supports up to 26 Ethernet ports plus two separate SCSI buses and the specific extensions NVRAM and tempterature monitoring and shutdown. Beside the system concept, Kontron Applications provided the entire driver development, documentation, and certification. As an OEM-partner Kontron Applications delivers the systems after a 100% testing directly to the end customers.
